The capital city joined the library for a week of thoughtful citizen engagement at the public library. The Capital City Read best selling author Khaled Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” which brings voice to Afghan history and began the week’s conversation.

The spotlight event took place on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 with the Afghan Women’s Writing Project (AWWP), wherein seven regional notables will read poems and prose from the AWWP project www.awwproject.org. Two voices include former University Regent Jill Derby, PhD who lived and worked in Saudi Arabia from 1966-69, and Western Nevada College (WNC) professor Marilee Swirczek. Ms. Swirczek, with Professor Don Carlson, helped steward WNC’s nationally acclaimed exhibit Always Lost: A Meditation on War, honoring America’s military war casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan through poetry, stories and images on an exceptional display known as The Wall of the Dead.
